Sunrise
Rejection

He had to know the sheer destruction the sunrise would bring
to her on this first full “alone again” day.
Still, no calls, no contact, no little way
did he seek to ask her if she was OK.

The stunned faraway look that haunted her face,
the vulnerability raw in her dark soulful eyes,
was so obvious as she limped through the day
to randomly concerned and vigilant guys.

Her banker radiated silly comments just to make her smile,
a lone bicycle racer eased his swift pace to take in her drawn yet delicate face,
an old friend shared gentle words with her at the local bookstore;
each in his own way was trying to restore her usual air of beauty and grace.

A decision made succinctly, that would be that,
had there been even one moment that was truly spent
to think through his mandate’s harsh impact on her
when he declared that they could now only be friends.
